Asekoff<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\"What I have always admired about Andrew Kaufman's poetry is how insistent he is about not settling for anything easy in his poems, and for how he stays with each poem until he's made it be the most that it can be.\u00a0 His embrace of the English line in this collection is illustrative of the poet's deep insights into what prosody is and can be and should not be.\u00a0 He understands too what all good metrical poets understand: that you don't sacrifice the language to satisfy the demands of the form; you do the opposite. The result is a funky music that seems to this reader as totally appropriate for our times. These sonnets are mini-dramas that link up to form the story of an American life told in rich, playful, deeply abiding language that sounds like the voices of our country, yet focuses specifically on a single incident and its ramifications.\u00a0 Brilliant.\"<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\u2014Bruce Weigl<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Andrew Kaufman<\/strong> grew up near NYC, graduated from Oberlin College, earned his MFA in poetry writing from Brooklyn College, and his MA and Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Toronto. His\u00a0<em>Cinnamon Bay Sonnets<\/em>\u00a0won the Center for Book Arts chapbook competition, and was followed by\u00a0<em>Earth's Ends<\/em>, winner of the Pearl Poetry Award, and\u00a0<em>Both Sides of the Niger<\/em>. His poems have appeared in numerous journals. He is the recipient of two Pushcart Poetry nominations and an NEA award. He has taught writing and literature at a number of colleges and universities, and has traveled extensively in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He currently lives in New York City.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <div role=\"tabpanel\" class=\"tab-pane \" id=\"tabs_desc_669_2\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<P>Calabash, mahoe, sea grapes, and manchineel<BR>\r\nare trees I learned from Skoka Zumi, who brought<BR>\r\nus, unasked, each day what fruits or flowers he might<BR>\r\nbuy conversation with, and an excuse to steal<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\ntoward us when we walked the beach in the moonlight<BR>\r\nor dawn I love. Filth crusted, with hints<BR>\r\nof dreadlocks, solicitude, and an account<BR>\r\nthat switched from growing up near the next<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nbeach on a dirt floor, to an orphanage<BR>\r\nhe escaped in Kenya, to jumping a merchant<BR>\r\nship in Port Said, his patois changed<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nto New York street slang. And all this<BR>\r\nfor what? If kingdom come, and hand join hand<BR>\r\nin starlight, the lost will still be lost.<\/P>\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<P>Under starlight the lost are no less lost--<BR>\r\nthe ones half sane, frozen and starved in silence<BR>\r\nso long they can't be found by the police<BR>\r\nwho kidnapped them, their arctic shacks lost in blizzards <BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nof vanished papers. Or the one they dragged<BR>\r\nfrom the barn past midnight who was found<BR>\r\npunching a dead horse. And those lost<BR>\r\ncloser to home, haunting high school reunions <BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nto convince classmates they have changed<BR>\r\nafter twenty years. Even in starlight\u2014<BR>\r\nthe one banging on cell bars in code <BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nremains lost, dreaming a rumor will start,<BR>\r\nwhispered, from one cell to the next\u2014<BR>\r\n<EM>I am here\u2014 and writing.
