But that clich\u00e9 would overlook the exquisite temporal dramas she attends to with such relish: no, hers is a cinematographer\u2019s vision, one deeply invested in what lies before and after, in and around and beneath her generous panoramas.\u00a0<em>Kiss\/ Hierarchy<\/em>\u00a0is a book of romances and transformations. It evokes the passions that lead us into darkened theaters and from there into the intrigues and enchantments of great film. On one hand van de Kamp resuscitates the golden age of Hollywood, and on the other she imbues everything she studies, even mammograms and head colds, doll furniture and devoured tulips, with the glossy, resonating power of an auteur\u2019s gaze.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\u2014George David Clark,\u00a0author\u00a0of\u00a0<em>Reveille,\u00a0<\/em>winner of the Miller Williams Poetry Prize from the University of Arkansas Press, and editor-in-chief of 32Poems<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"sm_text\" style=\"text-align: left\">Bees are \u201cscribes of daylight,\u201d a bird \u201clifts packages of wind,\u201d and night is falling \u201cdiligently behind\u2026pencil-long vegetables.\u201d Even human teeth have something to do as they \u201cdream their way through the language they are forced to chew.\u201d This brilliant poet, in her second full-length collection, certainly has her hands full! Her\u00a0<em>Kiss\/Hierarchy<\/em>\u00a0is so alive that it fills us with urges and longings to be workers in her meadow, reading and reading, so that we too might be transformed.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\u2014Janet Kaplan, author of\u00a0<em>Dreamlife of a Philanthropist<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"sm_text\" style=\"text-align: left\">Kiss\/Hierarchy\u00a0is one of the most original collections I\u2019ve read in recent memory. These are poems first and foremost in love with language, imbued with music. But there are themes, too; however, there is humor in the doubt. Casual sadness in the great joy. And energy: so much of it! The work is unfailingly precise and memorable, but there\u2019s also just enough coloring outside of the lines to keep the reader surprised, or a little troubled, the way you feel watching a gifted surgeon get creative with a scalpel\u2014relieved at how beautifully it works, while still catching your breath, and always very intrigued.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\u2014Laura Kasischke, recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and author of\u00a0<em>The Infinitesimals<\/em>\u00a0(2014)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"sm_text\" style=\"text-align: left\">I've been a fan of Alexandra van de Kamp's poems ever since I read\u00a0<em>The Park of Upside-Down Chairs<\/em>, but, having been privileged to read\u00a0<em>Kiss\/Hierarchy<\/em>,I can now declare that I am a\u00a0<u>rabid<\/u>\u00a0fan. These confident and arresting poems all shine! Pass the soup,<BR>\r\nsing yourself to sleep and watch a river<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nmurder itself again and again, the waters<BR>\r\nchurning in their own tureen of sunset blood,<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nthe eye sucked along as if dragged<BR>\r\ndown a drain\u2014some internal plumbing<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nin the paint pulling you toward the back<BR>\r\nof the scene, where The Eiffel Tower waits,<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nthe faucet turning off and on<BR>\r\nall this luminous action, all this Technicolor<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nspeed. The evening a migraine of pinks<BR>\r\nand greens, or a clementine smashed<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\ninto sheer pulp and sheen. At the embankment<BR>\r\nstands Chagall\u2019s blue and green horse\u2014a flattened<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\ngypsy caravan, a paisley toy in a child\u2019s<BR>\r\nhopeful hand. Lurid fairy tale + working-class<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\narrondissement = a train shuttering across<BR>\r\nthe metal bridge\u2014its blue windows blind eyes<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nin a Peacock\u2019s sleeping tail. I\u2019m waiting<BR>\r\nfor the gangster girl clutching her purse<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nto appear, skidding on heels beneath<BR>\r\nthe buildings simmering in reddish-<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\ndark shadow, by the fiery brick walls<BR>\r\nlining the river. Instead, no people in sight.<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nInstead, there is just the sky:<BR>\r\na crime of light and desire, a gash<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nof dark blue that whitens<BR>\r\nas it recedes towards the Tower.<\/P>\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<P><strong>Dear A\u2014<\/STRONG><BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nDear apple, dear angina,<BR>\r\ndear after-thought, here is<BR>\r\nanother day that is not in August.<BR>\r\nI write a friend who lives<BR>\r\nin Berlin (not a city with an a<BR>\r\nin it) and she doesn\u2019t respond. I think<BR>\r\nof all the strasses in Berlin, all the caf\u00e9s<BR>\r\nwith their sterling silver spoons and white,<BR>\r\nweighted cups. Where does a city<BR>\r\nactually end? Where does New York exactly<BR>\r\ngive way to the suburbs and stone-scattered<BR>\r\nfields surrounding it? Once, walking across<BR>\r\nSpain, I took note of how the pavement<BR>\r\ngradually increased as we approached<BR>\r\nthe city\u2019s gates. Dear pashmina, dear<BR>\r\nvintage year, it is so melodramatically green<BR>\r\nthis spring, I feel like I\u2019m suffocating: insects<BR>\r\nhatching eggs in the trees, the rain<BR>\r\ndark as ink, the garden furniture stained<BR>\r\nin cinematic regret. Where\u2019s Gatsby<BR>\r\nthe summer my mother was an extra<BR>\r\nin the film? Newport mansions<BR>\r\noozing afternoon light, roses clipped<BR>\r\nto the precise parting of lips. She wasn\u2019t allowed<BR>\r\nto get a tan. Once the film was released,<BR>\r\nI looked for her in a large party scene. Wearing a yellow,<BR>\r\nlamp-shade dress, she was seated at a table,<BR>\r\nbarely visible through the dancing legs<BR>\r\nof Redford and Mia Farrow.<BR>\r\nDo plots end like cities, a little fed up<BR>\r\nwith themselves? But then some cities<BR>\r\nare rosaries of tension. Dear abacus,<BR>\r\ndear anxiety, thank god I am not<BR>\r\nthe boy in the Borges short story<BR>\r\nwho can never forget anything\u2014his body<BR>\r\nteetering on stone walls, his mind<BR>\r\ntallying and tallying.<\/P>\r\n\r\n<hr>\r\n\r\n<P><STRONG>Bonjour Tristesse<\/STRONG><BR>\r\n<BR>\r\n<EM>for Jean Seberg<\/EM><BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nSummer is a slippery sorbet, flavored<BR>\r\nin lemon, raspberry,<BR>\r\nor some other fruit-splashed shade. Bonjour<BR>\r\nto the clairvoyant, rippling day.<BR>\r\nIt is 93 degrees in the shade,<BR>\r\nbut, hey, the shadows appear tame\u2014<BR>\r\neach shaped like a champagne glass<BR>\r\nfilling with something dark<BR>\r\nand thrilling, something you can\u2019t<BR>\r\nput a name to, although you have a feeling<BR>\r\nit\u2019s naming you, as it drinks<BR>\r\nup your arms, as it climbs<BR>\r\ninto the rooms you hadn\u2019t known<BR>\r\nyou kept inside of you. We are each<BR>\r\na portmanteau that life unpacks:<BR>\r\none compartment spilling out<BR>\r\ninto the voracious air, and then,<BR>\r\nthe next. You think your motives<BR>\r\nare better than any other girl\u2019s? You think<BR>\r\nyou can pinpoint the exact place<BR>\r\nat which intentions<BR>\r\ntenderly wait? The heart<BR>\r\nis a continent slipping inside,<BR>\r\nor a Riviera about to slide and slide<BR>\r\ninto the Mediterranean\u2014slack-jawed<BR>\r\nand patient. Play the crap tables, heroine,<BR>\r\nroll the dice, your taffeta dress skimming<BR>\r\npast the gaming tables\u2014in one hand<BR>\r\nyour gold-lam\u00e9 clutch. The body<BR>\r\na champagne glass time twists<BR>\r\nbetween index finger and thumb,<BR>\r\na nimble, shattering thing<BR>\r\nwe hate to see undone.<BR>\r\nHow far would you go<BR>\r\nto hold onto what you presumed<BR>\r\nwas your own? To own<BR>\r\na verb with such a decisive,<BR>\r\nominous groan. Summer is a tray<BR>\r\nupon which a medley of delicacies<BR>\r\nis delicately displayed: in the morning<BR>\r\n<EM>caf\u00e9 au lait<\/EM>, in the evening, the sky<BR>\r\na crystal-ball blue.
