Think layers. It isn\u2019t this or that, but this and that. It reads like the moments of the first swim in Spring. You jump into the freezing cold water. There is that single, burst of overwhelm, and then, as you slip deeper down, you think, \u201cDamn, this is beautiful.\u201d When you finally surface for air, your heart is full and tender, and you look up and see that, yes, \u201cThe sky is the day water was born.\u201d The poems in this book call us back to being bodies of spine and flesh and place us in the sacred spaces of womb, river and forest. They also catapult us into the wonders and terrors of mind taking on the supernatural, citified and mechanistic world of \u201cMachine.\u201d When we meet John at the end of the book, \u201cDo we feel Machine?\u201d No. We meet a man that already knows us. We feel inspired by his ease and authenticity and genuine love for the word. We feel a sudden nostalgia from the future for everything, and we are timeless in his presence.\"<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\u2014Rachel Bunting<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\"Whether describing a pigeon as a \u201cthe soul\/of a homeless penny\u201d and a \u201csmoke-filled dove,\u201d or \u201cwondering\/\/when the Sinatra stardust will fall,\u201d John Goode creates a reality that sidesteps physical boundaries. If it were possible to reshape language in the manner of scordatura tuning for a stringed instrument so the note played isn\u2019t the normally expected one, these poems would be the result. smoke-filled dove...\u201d<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nBut the hole continues to fill,<BR>\r\nand the pigeon continues to fill<BR>\r\nwith anything the sun casts away.<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nSometimes the pigeon makes it<BR>\r\nto the top of the clock, and burns there<BR>\r\nlike a remote and godless eagle,<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nand then its eyes turn black and violent<BR>\r\nas the middle of an ocean it\u2019s never seen.<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nHere it comes now.<BR>\r\n<BR>\r\nFork-footed.<BR>\r\nHallucinating like an old washcloth.<BR>\r\nEther-roach with a flock<BR>\r\nof eggs.<BR>\r\nLeaking like an
