I Am the Girl

by Cindy Hochman

“Cindy Hochman’s playful exuberance shines through each of her poems, putting the poet’s personality at the center of her work. She delights in verbal nuance, and it’s contagious. She aims to entertain, a rarity these days. And, her aim is true.”

—Eric Greinke

I am the girl who sits in the corner
I am the girl who still sucks her thumb
I am the girl who rattles the saber
I am the girl who bangs the gavel
I am the girl with the gangrenous fingers
I am the girl who swallows her pain
I am the girl with the ice-water veins
I am the girl who rides your coattails
I am the girl who drinks your cocktails
I am the girl who runs with scissors
I am the girl who tames the wild horses
I am the girl who plays well with bears
